The Surroundings Of Dornoch

Facilities in the area include several golf courses, driving range, bowling, tennis, fishing, sea angling, swimming pool and horse riding.
Bird watchers can enjoy Loch Fleet, and may even see an osprey during the breeding season.
The RSPB reserve at Forsinard makes an ideal day out.
Dolphin watching in the Moray Firth is increasingly popular.

Cluaine Lodge makes a good starting point for day excursions to the North and West Highlands, to view the breathtaking scenery.
Have a change from driving and take the train from Tain north to Thurso/Wick where you can view Orkney,
or west from Dingwall across to Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye.
Spend a day on Orkney, catching the ferry from John o'Groats.

Inverness and Culloden Battlefield; Cromarty and the Black Isle; the Castle of Mey;
Dunrobin Castle with its fascinating falconry display; and Inverewe Gardens are each within a day's run of Dornoch.

A peaceful lochan near Cluaine

In the quieter seasons, Dornoch offers peace and space to unwind, with empty roads to drive on to view the stunning scenery.

When did you last look out in the dark and see the Milky Way in all its glory, or the shadows cast by a full moon,
or the frost sparkling like millions of diamonds?

If you're very lucky you might even see the Northern Lights!
With very little light pollution all these wonders are often seen during the winter.

You can go for invigorating walks on the beach to Embo, back along the old railway line.
Then enjoy coffee, snacks or treats in the Patisserie, with its lovely homemade cakes,
before coming home to your warm bungalow.

In the evening, if you fancy a change from cooking, you can get an evening meal in Dornoch itself,
at the Eagle Pub, The Castle Hotel, Sutherland House, or at the award-winning 2 Quail.

On the way to Tain, you could try the Dornoch Bridge Inn which offers a warm welcome and very good value.

Golf continues during winter, with most courses in the area remaining open except when there is snow or hard frost.

This is a favoured spot for weather, and we tend to get the best of what's around.
